CallerID
Some of my calls do not have caller ID information. Is there something wrong?
In most countries, there are three types of calls:
  • Those with Caller ID
  • Those marked "Out of Area" - The number in the caller ID is actually O. This is sent for overseas calls, or from other phone networks where they didn't pass any caller ID information on to your phone system. No name or number is logged for these calls.
  • Those market "Private" - the number in the caller ID is P. Typically unlisted calls will show up as Private on your telephone. No name or number is logged for these calls

If you get the second or third type of call, no name or number will be logged. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with PhoneValet.

Fax
How do I make PhoneValet detect a fax if I've answered a call before PhoneValet?

If you've answered a call before PhoneValet and you hear fax tones, choose "Answer Fax Now" from the PhoneValet icon in the menu bar. PhoneValet will then instruct your chosen fax software to answer the fax. Wait until you hear fax tones from your computer before hanging up.

Miscellaneous
Can PhoneValet answer calls while my Mac is sleeping?

PhoneValet does not wake the Mac from sleep - MacOS X cannot wake up fast enough to retrieve the caller ID signalling (which is sent between the first and second ring), and often several rings have passed resulting in the caller to stop waiting and hanging up before PhoneValet to answer.

You can enable any other sleep settings for the screen, hard disks, and any processor performance settings, since these will not affect PhoneValet. You should not set the computer to go to sleep, though.

Can Time Machine be used to automatically back up my Parliant database?

No. Your Parliant database contains many files that need to remain in sync with each other. Time Machine was developed to backup single files and not multi-file databases.

However, if you make a backup by choosing the Backup command in the File menu, it will archive the database to a single file that can be safely backed up with Time Machine.

How Do I Uninstall Parliant Applications?

On your CD or in the downloaded disk image, there is a folder named Extras. There is an uninstaller there. Note, uninstalling is not recommended for troubleshooting. If you do not have an uninstaller, please see this page:

I keep getting an error "Waiting for database to respond" or "Telephony Services not running."

This is usually caused by the OpenBase database not running. There are a few causes for this. See our troubleshooting page for more information:

When I receive a new message, why doesn't the menu bar icon turn red?

In the Voice Mail preference, check the message titled "Suppress notification of messages shorter than n seconds." If a message is shorter than the value set here, it will not be emailed, will not be marked as new, and will not trigger the menu bar icon to turn red.

Why won't PhoneValet email some voice mail messages?

PhoneValet sends email sometimes, but some messages are not emailed.

In the Voice Mail preference, check the message titled "Suppress notification of messages shorter than n seconds." If a message is shorter than the value set here, it will not be emailed, will not be marked as new, and will not trigger the menu bar icon to turn red.

Recording
What audio formats are supported for voice mails and call recordings?

PhoneValet supports two versions of 3GPP, two versions of AAC, and WAV file formats for audio recordings and messages. The 3GPP file formats offer excellent quality and very small size (76 KB/minute). That means you could store over 191 days of 3GPP call recordings on a 20GB hard disk! The "3GPP Optimized for Treo" format is similar to regular 3GPP but is slightly larger. It is for compatibility with Treo smartphones and may work on other mobile phones as well.

With the AAC format you get easy compatibility with Apple's iTunes — you can carry your call recordings and voice mails with you on your iPod! The "AAC Optimized for iPhone" format is half the size of regular AAC, has slightly less audio quality, but is for faster downloading over EDGE networks.

The WAV format gives you easy access to source audio data for those who want to process their recordings, WAV is compatible with virtually any Windows PC without any added software.

If you are sending calls to a Windows PC and want to use 3GPP and/or AAC files, the Windows PC should have QuickTime for Windows installed.
